  • Phillip made the Dean’s List in 2008 and 2009.

Courses

  • In the course of his studies, he has taken classes on the fundamentals of InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and iMovie. Phillip is proficient in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. He also has experience operating and working around film equipment producing videos and audio files for his Fundamental Skills and Design class. Other relevant courses include his Principles in Advertising class in which Phillip has learned the fundamentals of advertising and marketing. In this class, Phillip and his group worked on a plan book (see e-portfolio) for a mock advertising campaign for a local non-profit called Our Community Place. It is a 36 page document including strategic plans to increase awareness, donations, and volunteers for the community center by using radio PSA’s, newspaper advertisements, revamped websites, and other tactics.
  • Phillip’s Introduction to Corporate Communication and Information Communication and Technologies classes have given him a solid foundation for understanding strategic corporate planning and communication as well as an understanding of more technical aspects communication through making an effective e-book and blog (see e-portfolio).  These courses have inspired Phillip to take time to learn more about his field of study outside of the classroom. He subscribes to e-mails and Twitter feeds from Mark Ragan, Ragan’s PR Daily, Social Media Club, and other similar sources and is continuing his blog.

Work Experience

  • Phillip helped manage the Twitter and Facebook pages for AEI by composing posts, measuring traffic, and monitoring the accounts. He has extensive experience in HootSuite, Omniture, and programs used for measuring website analytics. Phillip participated of media promotional meetings to spread awareness of the scholarly works written at AEI. Managing web content by posting articles through AEI’s CMS, Phillip has experience searching for pictures and editing them, finding pull quotes, bridging the articles to social media, and other related tasks necessary for the role.
  • Phillip is currently working for SilentCodeFeatures as a marketer.  He currently serves as an admin for their Facebook page in a limited role. He created an event for them as well as fliers for the event while brainstorming new ways for the company to gain awareness in the DC metropolitan area and to improve its website.
  • He is used to working in fast paced and often times chaotic situations after having worked in a very popular Italian deli/pizzeria/specialty shop called The Italian Store from 2008-present making sandwiches, handing out pizza, directing customers around the store, taking phone calls, and performing other miscellaneous tasks. Phillip can communicate effectively with customers who can be disgruntled and in a hurry whether through the phone and in person. Realizing that making the customer feel at ease can be just as necessary as providing a quick service to them, Phillip keeps a professional rapport with customers while remaining friendly and understanding.

Video Experience

  • Phillip has additional experience in video as he has served as a production assistant for a music video in August 2011 (post produciton). This involved setting up and breaking down lights and a green screen, operating lights, operating a camera dolly, and other related procedures. He has produced, directed, and managed a production at Arlington Independent Media in the summer of 2010 (post production). This entailed organizing the talent and volunteers, taking a course on operating the studio’s equipment, and operating the equipment. The show, called “Capital Culture”, is a sit down talk show in which artists interview one another about their work and ideas. In 2009, Phillip and four others created and entered a video into James Madison’s ISAT progam’s  promotional video contest. This video was made to fulfill the contest’s requirements to advertise the positive aspects of the ISAT program as well as to create a buzz about the video and ISAT. The video won both the ‘best judged’ and ‘most viral’ aspects of the contest. Phillip was involved in the writing and filming of it which required much patience, creativity, and teamwork skills.

Qualities

  • Phillip is an enthusiastic worker who wants to show his talents.  His patience and critical eye in examining and reexamining ideas and concepts means only the best work will show.  Phillip can adjust to adversity well. While directing “Capital Culture”, the headsets communicating from the control room to the set malfunctioned,   so he had to improvise a new communication system. He and a volunteer sent and received messages to those in the control room by using hand signals and using a new plan for filming. When approaching a problem,  Phillip tries to view them from every angle to solve them effectively.

Job Interests

  • Phillip believes he can be of value to any organization. Entry level positions are sought in the media, public relations, and marketing fields, and he is looking for those that can take advantage of his creativity, thoughtfulness, and willingness to get the job done well.

E-PORTFOLIO

  • E-book on corporate blogging and podcasting. Phillip helped design and write an E-book with five other classmates for his  Information and Communication Technologies class. The book covered five critical points in what professionals should think about when making a corporate blog and podcast. It required the use of InDesign, strategic writing and planning, and creativity.
  • Phillip’s personal website he created for a class project. This project gave Phillip many fundamental and intermediate skills needed to produce a functional website. It was created using Dreamweaver.
  • Cardinal Corp. strategic planning project. Here is another group project in which Phillip’s group was assigned to come up with effective communication strategies to help resolve several issues for a hypothetical company (Cardinal Corporation) including the disconnect between the CEO and his employees. Phillip and his group came up with a strategic and consistent plan through  using tactics such an implementing an online newsroom and having regularly scheduled meetings between the CEO and  employees.
  • ISAT video contest winner.
  • Blog on media and blogger relations. Phillip wrote and will continue to write this blog in order to further his knowledge on the topic. This project requires an understanding of the logic of a blog like knowing where and how to hyperlink, making posts that build off each other, and design. His post on using Facebook to connect with journalists was ‘tweeted’ by Journalistics.
  • Illustrator work. Here is a ‘before‘ picture for an assignment in his fundamental skills class. Here is the ‘after‘ in which Phillip had to use his skills to complete the desired look.
  • Advertising campaign plan book which he helped write, plan, and design. This book has an analysis of the mock client’s current situation, problems posed to it, objectives, target audiences, strategies, full budget, and a way to evaluate the campaign.
